Modelling Multilayer Communication Channel in Terahertz Band for Medical Applications

Abstract

In this work we present a multi-layer channel model for terahertz communication that incorporates both layers of human body tissues and textile layers. Many research works tackled communication channel modelling in human body alone while some other research focused on textile characterization/modelling alone. There is a real gap in connecting these different models. To investigate this, a multi-layer channel model for terahertz communication is developed, this model assumes external textile layer stacked over layers of human body tissues. The electromagnetic properties of the different layers are extracted from previous works that used time domain spectroscopy (TDS) in the terahertz band to characterize each of the considered layers. The model is implemented as a flexible MATLAB/Octave program that enables the simulation of layers with either fixed or random depths. This paper aims to pave the way to connecting patients’ in-body nano-nodes with off-body (on-cloth) nano-nodes by building such a combined channel model. This helps in many applications especially in the medical field. For example, having connected nano-nodes can help in diagnosing diseases, monitoring health by sending information to the external environment, treatment (e.g., increasing or decreasing a certain dose depending on the monitoring), etc. The obtained results show how the THz signal can be affected when it propagates through heterogeneous mediums (i.e., human body tissues and textile). Various types of path-loss has been calculated for this purpose and verified by comparison with results from previous research on separate models of human body and textile.

Essraa Hesham received the B.Sc. in Electronics and Communication from Cairo University in 2017.She is currently preparing master thesis in multidisciplinary program in advanced material and nanotechnology. Her research is interested in different fields in nano-technology as nano-communication, nano-network. She is working in a company related to networks.

Mohammed S. Gadelrab, National Institute of Standards (Egypt)

who is senior IEEE member, is currently working as an assistant professor researcher at the National Institute of Standards, Egypt. He has several years of multi-disciplinary experience in both academia and industry. His research interests span various areas including security, software testing, cloud, computer networks and IT metrology. Dr. Gadelrab earned a Master and PhD. in 2004 and 2008, respectively, from Toulouse University, France. Moreover, he has occupied several R&D positions:  research engineer at CNRS-LAAS, France; research fellow at the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity, Canada; senior research engineer at Hitachi Systems Security, Canada; Integration & Verification Engineer at Ericsson Canada.

Khaled ElSayed, Cairo University

Khaled M. F. Elsayed received the Ph.D. in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1995 and the M.Sc. in Engineering Mathematics and the B.Sc. (honors) in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University in 1990 and 1987 respectively. He is currently a professor of Communication Networks and the chairman of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering in Cairo University, Egypt. His recent work focused on radio resource management and architectures for 4G/5G wireless systems; applications of machine learning in telecommunications; and devising  scalable standards-based Internet of Things systems. He has 115 publications in international journals and conferences generating about 1900 citations. He is also a technical fellow with Si-Vision working on low-power wireless systems using standards such as Bluetooth Low Energy and Thread. Previously, he was the chief technical officer of the Embedded Wireless Division in SySDSoft which was acquired by Intel in March 2011. He was also a member of technical staff at Nortel Networks in the USA. Dr. Elsayed was an editor for the IEEE Communications Magazine Internet Technology Series from Nov. 1998 till Dec. 2002. He has also been a member of the technical program committees and session chair for several IEEE, IFIP, and ITC conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE.

Abdel Rahman Sallam, National Institute of Standards (Egypt)

Dr. Abdel Rahman Sallam received B.Sc. communication engineering from Alexandria university 1975, he received both M.Sc. microwave antenna 1984 and Ph. D microwave propagation 1996 from Al-Azhar university. He joined LCIE (France)1996, his work was in six port network analyzer and low microwave power sensor calibration using 7mm microcalorimeter, during 2013 he designed Tsunami warning radar as a common project between Egypt-Japan University (Egypt) and Osaka University (Japan). During 2014-2018 he joined a number of Egyptian universities as a teaching member, from 2018 to 2021 he was a contact person for ERAMET and AFRIMETS international comparison.Now he is Prof. Emeritus (NIS-Egypt), his interests are in microwave sensor calibration, VNA errors modelling, and Nano waves loaded by human body layers.
